Grande Baroque

The city of Melbourne is Australia’s second largest and boasts eclectic architectural styles, traditional and modern. When visiting Melbourne, architecture buffs will find no shortage of beautiful buildings.
1. Flinders Street Station – Constructed between 1905 and 1910, this Melbourne icon was built in the grand Edwardian baroque style which dominated that part of the city. The design of red brick and golden cream stucco won an architectural competition held in 1902. Trains had been arriving at Flinders Street since 1854 and still do today. It is far more than a train station. Meeting “under the clocks” is part of the Melbourne experience.
2. Opposite Flinders Street Station, is the ultra-modern Federation Square, featuring a striking building, plaza and fixed public screen. The building forms a U-shape around the main square. The Atrium walls the eastern end of the square and its base is lined with bluestone. The main square is paved with 470,000 ochre-colored sandstone blocks from Western Australia. Federation Square is a popular place for performances, cultural gatherings and meeting friends.
3. Opposite both Flinders Street Station and Federation Square is the Gothic Revival example of St Paul’s Cathedral. Built in 1891, St Paul’s was built on the site of the Melbourne’s first Christian service after Melbourne was founded in 1835. The interior features carved cedar woodwork, tessellated tiled floors, stonework and stained glass.
4. Eureka Tower – the second tallest residential building in the world. The Tower has a penthouse on the 87th floor. The skyscraper is 300 metres high with 92 stories and 3680 stairs. The top ten floors are glazed with 24-carat gold plated windows. The Eureka Tower also features “The Edge”, a reinforced glass platform that juts out giving people the feeling that they are suspended above the city.
5. Southern Cross Station – Melbourne’s largest city railway station was redeveloped between 2002 and 2006 following an innovative design featuring an undulating roof. The wave-shaped roof covers a concourse, bus interchange, food court, retail outlets as well as numerous railway platforms. The Royal Institute of British Architects awarded the station the Lubetkin Prize for most outstanding building outside the European Union.
6. ANZ Building – considered the finest non-Church Gothic Revival building in Australia, the building on the corner of Collins and Queen Street was built as the head office of the English, Scottish and Australian Bank between 1883-1887. The flat stone exterior features elaborate openings, including Venetian Gothic tracery. The banking chamber is resplendent with iron columns, ribbing and sculptural capitals. The building is now headquarters of the ANZ Bank.
7. Leviathan Buliding – Melbourne features many architectural styles, including art deco. Built in 1918, this elaborate 5-story arts and crafts building features art noveau, art-deco, mannerist, baroque and Chicagoesque motifs. Fancy scrolls support the deep cornice and the parapet features art noveau sign writing. The building is used for commercial purposes with shops at street level and offices above.
